Team Lucy raise £3,300 with Chatsworth sponsored walk!

Lucy from Chesterfield was just ten months old when she was diagnosed with a rare, malignant brain tumour in August 2014

Lucy underwent emergency brain surgery, lasting nine hours, as well as several rounds of chemotherapy and stem cell treatment as she fought for life. She would go onto spend the next five months on the Cancer and Leukaemia ward at Sheffield Children’s.

The life-saving treatment was not the end of the challenges for Lucy. The after-effects of her tumour have meant she is now tube-fed, having lost her ability to swallow while the chemotherapy also affected her lungs and hearing.

More than six years on, Lucy has faced her challenges with determination and grown to be a bubbly, smiley little girl who is popular with her friends at school. She likes to dance, sing and loves her princesses and dolls.

Lucy’s mum Tracey explains: “She has had to endure so much in her life so far, but we are so very grateful to all the teams at Sheffield Children’s that look after Lucy. They have been amazing and have given her the opportunity to live as full a life as possible.

“We are all excited about what the future holds for our superstar. Fundraising has become a big part of my life ever since as a way of saying thank you!”

Lucy and many of her family and friends took on a walk around Chatsworth in 2019 to say thank you for the care she received. The walk spanned Chatsworth House, Lodge Hill and the medieval Stand Woods, before passing the Hunting Tower, the Swiss lake and historic Aqueduct. Participants chose between the option of a 3km or 10km route, making the event open to everyone.

Over 400 kind-hearted supporters of Sheffield Children’s Hospital took to the iconic grounds. Many young participants helped find charity mascot Theo Bear’s lost possessions along the way and families also took the opportunity to enjoy a celebratory picnic by the Golden Gates after completing the challenge.

Team Lucy raised an incredible more than £3,300, which was dedicated to our appeal to build a new Cancer and Leukaemia ward at Sheffield Children's.
