Sixth star-studded Dan Walker Golf Day raises more than £20,000!

A star-studded celebrity golf day, hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker, has raised over £20,000 to build a new Emergency Department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

The sixth ‘Walker Cup (not that one)’ was held at the stunning Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield on September 9th. It was attended by numerous celebrities including former footballers Alan Shearer and Jermaine Jenas, TV presenters Louise Minchin and Gethin Jones as well as The Children’s Hospital Charity’s patrons Michael Vaughan and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill.

In total, 18 teams took part in the tournament. The RG Group team emerged victorious, made up of Chris Broadhead, Dave Dixon, Dean Anderson and Louise Minchin, Dan Walker’s BBC Breakfast co-host, who took home the trophy.

The overall individual winner was George Woolgar and former footballer Leon Osman won the individual celebrity league. In total, the event has now raised over £200,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital over the past five years.

This year’s total will go towards The Children’s Hospital Charity’s appeal to build a new Emergency Department. In total, £4.5m needs to be raised for the project, which will expand the clinical space and create privacy, helping children receive the most appropriate care the best possible way.

The department is a designated Major Trauma Centre, providing specialist care to children across the region. Originally designed to see 32,000 patients a year, it now sees up to 60,000 children every 12 months.

Tonya Kennedy, Philanthropy Manager at The Children’s Hospital Charity said: “It was a fantastic day. I’m really grateful for the remarkable generosity of our supporters and to everyone who helped make the day so special. Without their help, we wouldn’t have raised such an amazing total.

“It will make a life-changing difference to the thousands of young patients who depend on the Emergency Department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital every week.”
