Multipurpose Fluoroscopy System
The fluoroscopy system allows our radiologists to see moving X-rays, providing rapid diagnosis when every second counts.
Children's Champions have funded our Multipurpose Fluoroscopy System
The Multipurpose Fluoroscopy System is a life-saving piece of equipment which can quickly spot blockages to blood flow when every second counts. If a child has internal bleeding, we need to know where that is quickly as it can be the difference between life and death.
The fluoroscopy system allows our radiologists to see moving X-rays, providing rapid diagnosis when every second counts. Vascular trauma can lead to serious blood loss and disruption to parts of the body and the time from diagnosis to treatment is critical. Loss of blood supply can cause tissue to die, meaning a child could lose their limb. In some cases it can even be fatal.
A continuous X-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined and the beam is transmitted onto a monitor, enabling surgical intervention with minimal scarring and without the child needing to go to theatre.
It is the gold standard for treating vascular trauma and by funding the best equipment available; it means our patients can be treated here at the Children’s Hospital after previously being transferred by air ambulance to Leeds.
Children's Champions are changing lives like Cooper's
Cooper came to Sheffield Children’s in January 2018 with a perforated bowel. She spent weeks on our intensive care unit and her parents were told to prepare for the worst. Cooper has had multiple scans in our radiology department including scans by the Multi-purpose Fluoroscopy Machine. After 4 months in hospital she was able to go home and continue her recovery with her family and her pug Melvin. Before she left, Cooper taught our staff to floss as a thank you for the care she had received and with her teaching and watchful eye.
