A new wing for The Children's Hospital
Since The Children’s Hospital first opened its doors in 1876 we have continued to grow and serve our community as one of only four stand-alone children’s hospitals in the country. Now, as Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, our dedicated staff see over 220,000 patients every year from across our region and even from overseas, changing lives every day.
Looking to the future, we want to continue to grow our specialist services and improve the quality of accommodation for children and their families. To meet the needs of tomorrow, we need to start today.
Design chosen for new wing
The future is taking shape at The Children’s Hospital, Sheffield, now that a design has been chosen for a new wing.
Architectural company Avanti won the contract with their light and airy concept including a play tower running floor to ceiling in the reception area.
The building will be mostly funded by the government, with a special contribution from The Children’s Hospital Charity.
It’s hoped the finished design plans will be submitted to planners for approval in the summer. Building work for the new wing is expected to start in 2013 with completion planned for 2015.
The new build will include priority car parking, a high percentage of single rooms providing en-suite facilities for parents staying with their child, an inner court yard play area and a drop off point outside.
The charity will add that which is over and above standard NHS provision, creating the best possible environment and providing groundbreaking medical equipment to ensure the new wing is a very special place for patients and their families.

“This will be a flagship building for the hospital and for Sheffield. The design we’ve chosen will bring our ward facilities up to 21st century standards and the charity will help us take it even further.” - Simon Morritt, chief executive of Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust
