Why you should help

Play Worker...

The addition of a play worker with skills to support children through play, craftwork, stories and conversation, enhances the work of the department, adding a dimension that is not strictly chaplaincy but is supportive of children by creating an enjoyable environment where children often can talk out their fears and anxieties.

About the project

The Chaplaincy Service provides pastoral and spiritual care to all who request support or accept support offered. Chaplains are available 24 hours daily. Their focus is on supporting parents of patients, particularly those in crisis. Because the play worker is part of the chaplaincy team, the needs of children found through play can be sensitively absorbed into the supportive work of the chaplains.

Chaplaincy primarily addresses the issues of hope, fear, anxiety, stress, faith and doubt, religious needs and bereavement and is offered regardless of faith or religious affiliation. It aims to meet people “where they are”. The chaplaincy is equally available to patients, parents and relatives who are supporting a child in hospital as well as to staff.

The purpose of the Play Worker is to:

  • Organise, plan and deliver an activity programme that is broad and open to all offering a weekly Sunday Activity Club and midweek After School Club

  • Recruit additional volunteers to support the play worker role

  • Offer one to one pastoral and spiritual care to children
