Joshua inspires his teachers to run with us

6 March 2012

Joshua, the inspirational schoolboy who fronts our Run With Us campaign alongside Jessica Ennis, now has his teachers in training for the SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon.

Joshua, 14, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy aged 18 months. He has been treated ever since at The Children’s Hospital and has undergone many operations and procedures.

Despite this, at the age of ten he took part in the Great Yorkshire Run with his twin brother Samuel and he now runs for the Hallamshire Harriers.

Joshua’s latest achievement is to encourage eight of his teachers to join Team Theo and run the Sheffield Half Marathon on 27 May.

Peter Walton, Head of PE at Birley Community College, said: “When Josh asked me if I’d run the Sheffield Half Marathon I immediately said yes.

“Josh is an inspiration to both the teachers and his fellow pupils here and I’m amazed at what he’s capable of, so of course we wanted to support him and the hospital.

“He has only ever missed two lessons of PE despite his condition and he is always up for whatever sport we are playing.”

The teachers, whose subjects include PE, Design and Technology, IT and French are hoping to raise at least £1000 and will be organising a non-uniform day at the school to help achieve their target.

“We’re a mixed bunch,” said Peter, “Some of us have run marathons before, but this will be PE teacher Tara Madeley’s first ever half marathon. Paul Richards, who teaches IT, is the one to beat as he ran last year’s half marathon in just under one hour and 40 minutes.”

Joshua’s mum Michaela said: “Joshua is an inspiration to everyone he meets, nothing defeats him.”

Supporters from across the region are now raring to run for the charity after Joshua and Jessica launched our Run With Us campaign a few weeks ago.

The Adventure Film Festival at the Showroom Cinema this weekend will also be supporting the campaign.

Sheffield Adventure Film Festival Director Matt Heason said:  "We're delighted to support the Run with Us campaign. The Children's Hospital Charity is a great cause and the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival is all about inspiring people to get out there and have a go.

“There's a cracking line up of running films and speakers at this year's festival including a lecture by English marathon record holder Charlie Spedding."

Whether you’re an experienced runner or a complete beginner, when you run with us we’ll support you all the way.

There are races happening all over the country throughout the year – please make 2012 your year to make a difference and run with us.
