Getting started

What's your big fundraising idea?

The sky’s the limit - how about a sky dive? Or try raising money as well as your heartbeat with a trek, a swim-a-thon or a cycle event. If getting sweaty isn't your thing, get baking with a charity cake sale or turn down the volume with a sponsored silence.

It's all about the money

Think about how much money you want to raise for Sheffield Children's Hospital and make this your target. It is often helpful to ask for that extra £5 if it will help you reach your fundraising goal.

List your costs and estimate how much money you will make. This will give you your budget.

Know your break-even point so you know how much money you need to make to cover costs.

Don’t forget to think about when costs have to be paid.

If you are organising charity event, do you need a float at the event and is there a secure place for the money to be stored if needed?

Can you reduce expenditure through donated goods or company sponsorship?

How to boost your fundraising

Set up an online fundraising page to make it easy for your friends to donate. Once you are set up these pages will help you share information about your fundraising and why you are helping to make it better for Sheffield Children's Hospital. Plus donations made online can be paid directly to The Children's Hospital Charity. Have a look at either JustGiving or VirginMoneyGiving.

Here are a few tips:

  • Make your fundraising page personal and write about why you are taking on your charity challenge
  • Add a photo
  • Update your page with stories about your fundraising
  • Post your page to FacebookTwitter and any other social media platform you have access to
  • Email the link to friends, family and colleagues
  • I've thought of a fundraising idea, what do I need to do next?

Once you've decided how you'd like to raise money for Sheffield Children's Hospital, your first step is to register your fundraising with us. Please complete an agreement form so we can support you with your fundraising.

  • How do I set up a text code?

Create a text code by visiting JustGiving and select JustTextGiving from the Fundraising drop down menu. Follow their instructions to set up your own text campaign.

It’s free to set up and whatever mobile network you are on, your supporters can simply text your unique code and an amount of £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to 70070. You’ll be able to see these donations on your page – and they’ll be included in your fundraising total.

Don't forget to remind your supporters they can still add Gift Aid to their donation to boost your target.

Text Giving is only available for those who have already set up a Just Giving page.

  • How do I tell people about my event?

Getting your story in the press can help you attract more people to your event and raise more cash for our children. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t had experience writing a press release before or speaking to the press as we have compiled a publicity guide and media pack full of top tips to help you promote your event.

  • I need some fundraising materials for my event, where can I get them from?

The charity can provide you with material such as balloons, posters, sponsor forms, leaflets, collection tins and buckets and charity t-shirts. You can request how many you would like on the back for the agreement form. You can also download bunting and paper chain templates to help decorate your event.

  • I would like to ask companies to donate raffle prizes but they are asking for proof of fundraising from the charity. What can I do?

You need a letter of authorisation from us which states what fundraising you are doing and that your event has been authorised by The Children’s Hospital Charity. To get one of these letters all you need to do is complete our agreement form and return it to us.
