Funded: Surgical Navigation System
In 2011, we raised £250,000 to provide our hospital's theatres with this groundbreaking surgical equipment.
The money was raised largely through donations to Michael Vaughan's China Trek and topped up with additional funds raised at our Winter Ball.
This new state-of-the-art system is called an Integrated Intra-operative Surgical Navigation System (IIOSNS) and can be used in brain, spinal, and ear/nose/throat operations. It will allow our surgeons to see a unique, 3D, real-time map of the area they are operating on.
Image guided surgery system has revolutionised Neurosurgery because it provides surgeons with a way to navigate through the body using 3D images as their guides. The system can take a variety of traditional imaging sources (eg MRI/CT) which can be changed, manipulated and merged to provide the exact view the surgeon needs, both before the operation takes place and in the operating room. The surgeon can see the exact location and orientation of their surgical instruments thus enabling them not to compromise any nearby muscle, tissue, nerves or blood vessels.
