Funded: Bone Anchored Hearing Aids

In 2011 we raised £13,777 to provide our Audiology Department with 5 stock Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHAs).

A BAHA works by transmitting sound through the bone directly into the inner ear – for our young patients, this helps them communicate and enables them to reach their educational and social potential.

BAHAs are suitable for patients with a conductive, mixed or single sided deafness and can be worn on a removable softband around the head or can be attached to a peg which is surgically implanted into the skull.

As each BAHA is funded by the NHS on an individual basis, there is currently no “stock” for when problems arise with them. We can now provide our Audiology Department with 5 stock BAHAs for them to use to replace lost devices, offer loan devices when a child’s own BAHA is being repaired or to enable a trial of a BAHA to take place at home and school before a decision is reached.
