Chicken's last run
2 April 2012
Chicken runner Fabian Cruz has chosen us as the charity to support in his last feathered fundraiser.
Chilean born Fabian, aka ‘Super Pollo’, has frequently hit the headlines over the years as the caped clucker but due to tendon problems, is likely to hang up his wings following the Sheffield Half Marathon on 27 May.
Fabian, 47, has been taking part in marathons since 1984 and raised thousands for charities along the way.
His charity work has seen him invited to Downing Street and be nominated to carry the Olympic Torch when it passes through Warmsworth, Doncaster on 26 June.
Fabian stopped doing full marathons in 2010: “I’m getting slower and slower and it’s frustrating running behind people I could have overtaken before, but I wanted to do it one last time.”
The head chef, who works at Cubana on Trippet Lane, came to the UK with his family in 1978 as a political refugee and chose the chicken because it reminded him of a Chilean cartoon character.
Fabian has recruited friends and colleagues to run with him and you can help the ten-strong Team Super Pollo reach their £2,000 target by visiting: http://www.justgiving.com/team-superpollo
Molly Limpet’s Fancy Dress in Woodseats have kindly loaned Fabian the famous costume free of charge for the event.
The SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon takes place on 27 May 2012. For more information, visit: www.sheffieldmarathon.com
We’re so happy that ‘Super Pollo’ has joined Team Theo. Have you ever seen a chicken following a bear?!
Super Pollo and Theo could go head to head in the Mascot Race – Theo wants 30 more runners to make our Sheffield Half Marathon team up to 200, then he’ll enter.
