Freya’s story

Freya suffered with persistent coughing and breathlessness, despite being a fit and active child.
It wasn't until she was assessed with a bronchoscope at The Children's Hospital that the cause of her symptoms was explained.

Freya said: "After the procedure my consultant was able to confirm that I had a chronic endobronchial infection, which is an ongoing bacterial infection of the airways that would not clear up using a standard course of antibiotics.

"I had to stay in hospital for three days and received a two week course of intravenous antibiotics and now take oral antibiotics daily. I no longer cough every day and have lots more energy."

Freya's consultant, Dr Heather Elphick, said: "Freya had daily symptoms which had been ongoing and were interfering with her ability to achieve her best sporting performance. In other children with the same condition, their level of activity and ability to learn and socialise are all affected. If left untreated, this condition may lead to irreversible damage to the airways and lungs causing lifelong cough and breathing impairment.

"The results from the bronchoscope mean that appropriate treatment can be started immediately, usually leading to the child's full recovery."

Freya's mum, Julia, said: "Freya is a lot healthier and feels better than she has done for such a long time. Freya's attendance at school has improved and she has been able to enjoy her favourite sport, swimming."
